Essex Federation Events
The Essex Federation organise two Saturday events in the Autumn and Spring at the Feering Community Centre (click here for a map). Three courses run throughout the day on a variety of topics.

Whether you want a convenient introduction to the WEA or just want to meet up with old friends in a convivial atmosphere, these events are ideal for you. The next event is scheduled for Saturday 15th November 2008 at the Feering Community centre - see here and below for details.

Advance notice is given of Essex Federation Spring One Day School 2009 - Saturday 25th April at Feering Community Centre. Three topics have been arranged:

"200 years after Darwin's birth and 150 years since "The Origin of the Species": Charles Darwin and Alfred Wallace" by Dr. David Smith, Lecturer in Marine and Freshwater Biology, Director of the Coral Reef Research Unit, University of Essex

"After the Olympics: China: its History and Emergence as a World Power" by Nicholas Hyman

"250th anniversary of his birth: the Life and Poetry of Robert Burns" by Dr. Susan Oliver, Lecturer in Literature and Culture, University of Salford, formerly of the University of Essex - Winner of a British Academy prize in 2007

Course Title: Elizabeth I and the County of Essex [ONE DAY]
Course Description: Elizabeth’s maternal family, the Boleyns, had strong Essex connections, and she herself was to make one of the key speeches of her reign at Tilbury in the Armada Summer of 1588. But was this all it appears to have been? She also visited Essex, its families and great houses, on a number of her summer Progresses away from London. How welcome was she?

Course Description: The purpose of this day course is to promote a deeper understanding of three world faiths related to each other ideologically and historically, each of which is significant in today’s world.

Course Title: “Can British Farmers still Bring Home the Bacon?” [ONE DAY]
Course Description: With low farm prices in the late 1990s farmers have had a tough time. However, recent world shortages of basic food items have brought rapid price increases. Farm incomes look set to rise, but will these increases be short-lived?
